Hi.
I never had birds as pets or any other pet infact but one day i might have.
The following question might sound stubit but is it easy to feed the bird or birds if you are blind? I would worry in kace as soon as i open the cage door to feed them that they will fly out.
So what is the answer to this question?
Thanks
Nikos
Hi Nikos,
we are all awaiting louises answer to this post. ehhehehe smiles. i love ya chicky! hehehe
OK, since Shea has rather obligated me to answer this topic I shall do so! Let me just say this...in 2001, I had an operation to reduce my breast size. 3 days after the operation I had a parrot clamp its beak firmly around my left nipple. That, hurt, like, hell! The most embarrassing to go to the local accident and emergency department and tell them what happened...just a word of advice Nikos...don't breastfeed your birds!

I have a parakeet and I love him to death!! It's rather easy to keep him from getting out of his cage, but all birds should have a couple hours of out of cage time each day anyway, plus at least an hour with their human.

i had a parot and i would let him fly around the house. I had to close the cage door as hes on his perch sleeping and put food on his tray. first, i would take the food tray out of the cage. then i close the door before he wakes up or moves. then i put his food inside his cage and close the door quicly.
We had a cocketeel, and it was very annoying. I never actually got the experience of feeding him. Thank goodness he's gone.
Hi. I have a lorekeet a budgie and a rosella. all our cages have got smaller doors where you can put food trays in and take them out. the bird can't get out of there. Although our Rosella's cage is left open so he can come in and out as he likes. He is extremely tame though.
hope this helps.

hmmm, my very ferst pet berd, floo away. because 1of my cousin's oapind the cage dore. he says he wanted to see what would the berd do. haha! what a jackass!
We apparently, had a budgie called Fang when my parents moved in to their first flat when I was born, but him and Carly, our Alsatian used to fall out big time and mum found Fang far too noisy, especially with a small baby around the place, so he had to go. Carlie followed shortly after as she was far too over-protective of me and she would attack anyone coming near my pram, highchair, cot Etc.

Yes, the smaller doors for inserting water and food dispensers are very helpful. Once you have had the bird long enough and once it has bonded with you, you won't have to worry about it getting out. If it does get out at that point it will be coming out of the cage to see you, or will come back to you after a few turns around the room. Also, it certainly won't get away from you if it's wings are clipped. Just like beak trimming wing clipping is helpful and not at all cruel. Both in fact are safer and medically sound for the bird. A bird with clipped wings can glide safely, if say it was to fall off of something, so that it would not be hurt, but it would prevent it from flying out a window, getting caught in a cealing fan, etc.
Thanks to all for all your suggestions and advice or oppinions on the matter. Much appreshiated.
Hi. to the person wondering about a pet bird keep us updated if you ever do and if I can help drop me a line.

I don't have a bird as a pet yet but i might get one in the future. However i wonder how does the bird feel not being able to be free and fly wherever it wants etc? Is it right to have birds as pets? I know it is nice in the house to have such a bird and listen to it but i am not sure if they feel ok being stuck with us lol.
This topick is almost oe year old. Last year i didn't think much about this but now i start wondering.
Hi. pet birds are bred in captivity so they probably don't know much else. I figure that since they have been bred as pet birds they are ok. We let our birds out to fly around the house. They wouldn't know how to live in the wild so if they were released they would die. I think it's ok to have pet birdes as long as they get great care and you spend time with them making sure they don't get bored.

we had cocketeels, i accidentally killed one, and the other was so damn annoying that we had to get rid of it, bbut we had this thing tat stuck through the bars of the cage, the top came off so you could dump the food down inside it, and then it came out in to a little tray in the cage, we always kept their wings clipped too, i always lft tha house when that happens, let me warn you its so annoying you want to break the bird's neck lol
I used to have 2 budgies as pets a few years ago and they were in a cage. I didn't want them to be in the cage much, but we didn't have a choice. Mum didn't let them out very much, so I just had to talk to them and stroke what I could reach of them through the narrow bars. There were 2 feeders on the side of the cage, where the lids lifted up and you could put the food in without opening the door of the actual cage. The only trouble was, that mum left one of the feeders open once and it was lucky that the birds hadn't worked out that they could get out of the cage that way.
Harmony.
You know it would be cool, to own a talking berd.
Do you mean a talkin parrot? I think they are expensive and need a lot of training and somebody very patient with them to learn to talk. But i like them too.
Yeah! I think they are the coolest animal on this earth. Be sise dalfins.
By the way if anyone is interested in birds blind birders is my discussion group. We don't discuss much pet birds but more bird migration, bird activity throughout the year, bird songs etc. but if you want you are welcome to join.

I think my budgies tried to talk, but they didn't get very far. Mum's parot doesn't really talk, but I was told that parots only use talking as a defence mechanism. That makes sense, why pet birds don't talk, because they've got nothing much to defend themselves against because there's always someone looking after them.
How do you accidentally kill a pet bird? just curious
My budgies didn't get killed, they froze when it was really cold a few years ago and they were put outside in the aviery with the other birds.
awww? i miss my birds, I had two budgies when I was in Florida, my mom left them out in the sun too long one day and one of them died, I had to giv the other one away, cuz I was moving, I was sooo upset.
We had a cockerteal as well as all the budgies.
i had birds when i was little. it is easy to feed them. you have to take the little food tray and close the cage immediately or else the birds will get out. make sure ther head is not popping out of the cage because that means they are trying to get out.
in order to feed them put your finger inside the cup and mesure the amount of pelets by porring them and feeling the amount with your finger inside the cup just like you wood with liquidds. hope it helps.
What are budgies? The name sounds cute. lol
